Parents often ask me when is the right age for their child to start learning piano with Musiah. In other words, will their child be able to cope with the lessons if they are just 5.5 years old (or 6, 7 or whatever age).
And always, my answer is basically the same…
When an individual child will be ready to start learning with Musiah depends on the child themselves and, to some extent, their parents and the scenario in which they will be learning.
The common factor with young students who do very well in their Musiah piano lessons is that they have parents who also learn with Musiah so they can encourage and help their child as needed.
Today, I’d like to share with you a great example of a father who is doing an excellent job of encouraging his young son to practice hard and progress through the lessons and the performance challenges.
It was just an incidental comment in an email received from Conrad H of Wollstonecraft, NSW, Australia about how he encourages his young son Tristan (age 8) to practice.
In terms of how he encourages Tristan to practice enthusiastically, etc. Conrad wrote;
“I’ve been doing that largely by taking lessons along with him; he loves “challenges” where we both alternate at trying to obtain stars on a song “at the same time” – he has couple of goes and then me on our respective student profiles”.
As soon as I read this, I thought what a great tip this is…
Creating simple challenges between a mum or dad and a child where they take it in turns to each have a go at something like a performance challenge at the end of a level, or even just attempting an audition for a particular piece – Brilliant! This is exactly what I find works the best and I couldn’t have put it better myself.
It reminds me of the old saying, “a family that plays together stays together”. But it goes deeper than this. By sharing the piano lessons journey and being a living example that you are never too old or too young to learn something new, you are opening your child’s mind to limitless possibilities and opportunities and setting them on a course that will profoundly influence their whole life for the better.
So thanks Conrad and Tristan for sharing.
I hope you (dear reader) found this tip helpful.
